Main Research Interests

Foundational issues: The role of mental models in the shaping of economic perception/experience, i.e. how our cognitive and subconscious frameworks impact how we see 'the economy,' and inasmuch we believe us able to change its current state of affairs. This extends into questions as to whether to see economics as a (natural or social) science or rather along the lines of the humanities, whether necessity or freedom is the bedrock of economic theory and practice, whether quantitative or qualitative conceptions of economic freedom and welfare are more instructive, whether there are ethical strictures common to all of humanity that extend to the business realm, and whether and how these could be realized in market economies, by competition or collaboration, through individual, collectivist, or cooperative modes of economic action, etc.

Claus Dierksmeier in 50 Words

Someone who, as a kid, ardently wanted to be an astronaut, or, at minimum, an astronomer. The 'planetary perspective' on life then acquired stayed with me, although I changed my professional goals halfway through high school. That is to say, I am an unreconstructed cosmopolitan with a fervent love for cultural diversity as expression of the very unity of human life - in and through symbolic forms.
